William Conway

May 13, 1938 — October 21, 2016

William Aloysius Conway, III (Bill) peacefully passed on to eternal life on October 21, 2016 after an eight month battle with the complications of a viral encephalitis suffered in February. He was surrounded by his children and his wife Susana, who accompanied him on this final step of his journey by singing psalms of joy as he passed to his Father. Bill was born in South Orange, New Jersey, on May 13, 1938, to William Conway and Peggy Higgins. He was the oldest of 7 siblings. His love of books and learning led him to an undergraduate degree in the Great Books Program from Notre Dame University and from there, went on to get his law degree and MBA from NYU and Fordham University, respectively. It was on that fateful day, on his way to graduation at Fordham, that he asked a lovely young lady for directions to the campus, as he had never visited the Bronx campus. That young lady, Mary Ellen, also on her way to graduation, became his wife six months later. Together they had 5 children: William A. Conway IV (Rusty), Giles, Anne, Mary and Monica. Early on in their marriage, Bill realized that his current career on Wall Street was a dangerous culture that took his energy and time away from being a husband and father. He made a career change and became a commercial real estate broker. This decision coupled with his childhood love of the ""Wild West"" finally drew them out to live first in Boulder, and finally in Denver, Colorado, where they continued to raise their young family. Bill was a loving father who read to his children every night. He always made decisions looking out for the best for his family. He instilled in them his love of nature, books and learning, and most importantly, especially in the last 20 years of his life, his love of God. Thanks to his wife Mary Ellen's cancer, and after years of searching for their place in the Catholic Church, they attended a catechesis of the Neocatechumenal Way. Bill, albeit reluctantly, accompanied Mary Ellen, and upon her death on September 14, 1995, he realized that he was right where he needed to be. In the last 20 years of his life, Bill was a true evangelizer, offering his life as a seminarian or a catechist to go wherever God sent him; but realizing over time, that he was called to follow Christ precisely where he was, in Denver with his family, in his job, and with everybody he came across. Bill never missed out an opportunity to share with others his story of how God saved him; and that God had the same love for the person with whom he was speaking; whether it be a waitress, a nurse helping him at the hospital, or the person who he happened to be sitting next to on a plane. In 2011 after many long and solitary years Bill received a joyful gift, a surprise that no one anticipated, to become a husband again to Susana Campos, and a step-father to her children Giovanni, Regina and Milagros. It was in these final five years of his life that Bill was able to live in total gratitude. He soaked up the joy of each moment; Susana's family and extended family welcomed Bill with open arms. He joked that he had become an honorary Mexican because he developed a true taste for jalapeños and hot sauce. Bill loved being a grandfather and was always willing to lend a hand, either with pickups from school, reading The Hobbit or trips to outer space at the museum or the ""parque de dinosuars."" Bill and Susana walked in the third community of St. Louis, who supported them especially in these last months, in which Bill needed companionship in the hospitals and round-the-clock care at home. Bill will be missed by his wife Susana, his children Rusty, Giles, Anne, Mary and Monica, and his stepchildren Giovanni, Regina and Milagros. His grandchildren: George, Spencer, Vivian, James, Willa, MaryEllen, Lyla, Salvador and Noe will also miss him. Of all his accomplishments, Bill always said that the most important thing he ever did was to have a family. God blessed him with two. His funeral mass will be held on Monday October 24, at 11:00 am at St Louis Parish in Englewood, Colorado. It will be followed by a reception in the cafeteria of the school. His wake will take place starting Saturday, October 22nd at 5 pm at 4120 South Yates Way. It will continue through Sunday evening.
