April 4, 1931 ~ August 9, 2019

Born in: Denver, CO
Resided in: Arvada, CO

Margaret Nelson Oltrogge was born on April 4, 1931, in Denver, Colorado, to Carl Walfred and Margaret Pauline (Johnson) Nelson. She joined siblings, Pauline, 10 and Carl, 7. Margaret passed away on August 9, 2019.

She attended Denver Public Schools (Mora Moore Elementary and Byers Junior High School) and graduated from South High School in 1949. She worked many summer jobs from the age of fourteen, most frequently at Conoco Touraide Headquarters in Denver. Margaret lived in Pasadena, California for a year and a half and attended Pasadena City College. She then worked for Phillips Petroleum as a secretary and switchboard operator in Denver until she saved enough money to pay for her next semester in college. Margaret graduated from Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California in 1956 and taught in Denver Public Schools and in Ithaca, New York. Later she obtained a Masters Degree in Library Media at the University of Colorado, and worked as a Library Media Specialist in Jefferson County Schools, Colorado, for nineteen years.

She married Victor Oltrogge in 1956 at Belcaro Free Church in Denver, Colorado. They were blessed with four wonderful children: Kirk David, b. 1959, Kathy Lynne (Nichols), b. 1962, and twins Sheri Lea (Perlan) and Scott Nelson, b. 1964, and ten grandchildren. Her son Kirk preceded her in death in December 2007.

Next to her relationship with God, the most important thing in her life was her family. She loved her role as wife and mother, and later as grandma. She enjoyed teaching, reading and encouraging children to read. Participating in Christian Women’s Club – both in Illinois and Colorado – and in Community Bible Study in Arvada was rewarding. Many friendships grew from these special activities.

Memories Timeline

  1. Margaret, We enjoyed knowing know. You were a great mom, wife and person.
Thank you for your life with us.
Love to you and your wonderful family.
    Helen and Dave Famiano

  2. Margaret was a very nice person and very pleasant to talk to. Our prayers go out to the family. We will keep Margaret in our prayers.

  3. I will sorely miss my Aunt Margaret’s soft-spoken kindness and her amazing thoughtfulness. She was so talented, so artistic … hand-crafting greeting cards that held cherished family photographs, or memory books with pictures clipped from magazines alongside her handwritten humorous captions; and even when passing along a book she’d enjoyed, you would discover a bookmark she’d lovingly created. Margaret was elegant, gracious, and a wonderful friend to her sister (my mother) and to me after my mother’s death.

  4. Sorry I am unable to attend the service. Margaret’s spirit and gracious attitude toward everyone she met will always be remembered. God Bless all her family as they celebrate her grand entrance into Heaven. Marcia Martin

  5. We remember Margaret and Vic from our time in the Youth Department at Trinity Baptist Church, Wheat Ridge, CO.
Your lives were excellent role models for the young people you served and befriended.
Sorry to Vic for your loss. You are in our thoughts.
Lynn Gray Jr. and Diana Gray Kasson
