Dr. Mark T. Atwood, 91 passed away at his home on December 2, 2018.
Born November 21, 1927 in Oklahoma, he later lived in Texas and went through high school in San Francisco. He early on decided on a career in chemistry.
Mark loved education and he obtained a BA at Park College in Missouri followed by a M.S. and PhD in organic chemistry at Purdue University. Industrial experience began with 12 years in petrochemical research with Continental Oil Co. This involved producing chemical products from oil refinery products and by-products.
In 1966 Mark joined TOSCO Corporation in Colorado as the Manager of Laboratories. Laboratory.
Mark published approximately eight oil shale publications and gave presentations to several Oil Shale Symposia.
Mark was a very kind, gentle quiet man and when he spoke it was always something of value. He loved his grandchildren and spent as much time as he could with them. He believed in education and was an avid reader of history and presidents owning almost 3,000 books.
Mark and Kay loved to travel and did so often. Some of the many adventures they took were to the Holy Lands, Cairo, London and Rome along with many cruises including three with Lisa and Michele.
We all will miss Mark terribly. His last words to Kay were “I love you very, very, very much”.
Survivors include his wife Kay Atwood, two step daughters Lisa Pettinger (Richard) and Michele Sack (Patrick Meroney), 6 grandchildren – Matthew Pettinger (Kristen), Tonia Griffith (Lee), Desiree Pettinger, Amanda Sack, Ronnie Sack and Adam Sack as well 6 great grandchildren and 1 more on the way. Preceded in death was Mark’s daughter Jennifer in 2003.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Horan & McConaty, 7577 West 80th Avenue, Arvada, CO 80003.
