Christopher Joseph Canter, or Joey as he preferred to be called by family and friends, passed away unexpectedly on July 2, 2021.
Joey, in his all too short of time with us, lived life as he chose to, carefree and on his own, traveling throughout Europe in his late teens and early twenties. He returned to the states, first to Denver, Colorado as a property owner and landlord, and following that, he moved to Eugene, Oregon, where he discovered his love of surfing and camping in the great outdoors.
His love of adventure moved him to board a cruise ship and travel to Chile, where he lived for 8 and a half years, teaching himself the language, and adapting to their culture. He supported himself in his travels by working as a Computer Programmer and teaching English. In those adventures, Joey reinvented himself by raising ducks and selling the meat and eggs to the local markets around Villarrica, Chile. Being a Farmer was what made him most proud.
Joey returned to the states in November of 2020, briefly staying with his parents in Littleton, Colorado, then with his sisters in Nebraska. Shortly after, he returned to Denver, Colorado where he resumed his carefree, independent lifestyle.
Over the years Joey constantly traveled the world with his four-legged companions, Duffy, Petey, and Simon, experiencing different cultures. The food and the people that he was fortunate to meet was what drove his love of travel. This is something a lot of us will never be able to experience to the extent that our beloved Joey did.
Joey is now on to his next journey, with our Lord and Savior. Our boy who was so loved, will be deeply missed.
Joey is preceded in death by his grandmother, Virginia Grace Canter. He is survived by his parents, Jeannie and Gary Martinez; his sisters, Tiffany Martinez, and Tonya (Martinez) Gillette; his extended family, Kiki Gillette; and nephews Corbin and Cole Gillette.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joey’s name to Animal Rescue Missions.
Per Joey's request, services will be observed by immediate family and friends only.
Please leave memories and condolences for Joey by signing the tribute wall.
