In loving memory of David A Smart
January 5th, 1943 ~ November 3rd, 2020
David A Smart, 77, of Aurora, CO, passed away on Tuesday, November 3rd, at his home with his family by his side.
David was born on January 5th, 1943, to Harry and Dorothy Smart at Evanston hospital in Evanston, IL. In high school, he played baseball and was active in the Young Republicans Club. David graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1961. After high school, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Political Science from Northwestern University in 1965. After his studies at Northwestern University, David completed one year of graduate studies at DePauw University. He was an active member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity (Beta Beta chapter).
He started his career in the late 1960s working in sales and marketing research for a pharmaceutical company in Rochester, NY. In 1968, he joined the Chicago Convention and Tourist Bureau, where he worked for three years as the Sales Manager and National Sales Manager. In 1971 he went to Toronto, Canada, as the Director of the Toronto Convention Bureau. While in Toronto, he was the President of the Canadian Association of Convention Bureaus as well as the Director of the Ontario Chapter of the Hotel Sales Management Association (HSMA). In 1974 he assumed a position with Braniff International Hotels in New Orleans, LA, as Director of Marketing, being promoted to the Corporate Vice President of Sales and Marketing in 1976. In 1977, he became a sales and marketing consultant for the International Hotel. In 1979, David moved to Colorado Springs, CO as the Director of Sales for the Colorado Springs Convention Center. In 1982, he started his own company, David A Smart & Associates, which catered to the convention and visitor’s bureau industry, until he retired from the business in 2010.
David enjoyed playing baseball and was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan. One of his wishes before passing was to see the Cubs break the curse of the Billy Goat by winning the World Series, which they did in 2016. We are sure David is chatting it up with some of the baseball greats as we speak.
David is survived by his daughters, Heather (Chris) Brevik and family: Emily Herbert; Jenny (Steve) Luxa and family: Samuel and Benjamin.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Dorothy Smart, sister Gwen Smart, sister Rachael Smart Helliwell, and brother Harry Smart, Jr.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, family, and friends for their care and support.
A memorial service for David will be held on November 27th, 2020 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Horan & McConaty in SE Denver/Aurora, CO.
