Dorothy Hines

June 15, 1930 — June 21, 2021

Dorothy Irene “Dottie” Hines, beautiful and loving wife, mother, nana, grandma, mentor, and friend to so many, passed peacefully in her sleep on Monday, June 21, 2021 at the age of 91. Her room at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Denver was at capacity as her children, their spouses, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren surrounded her. Dorothy was born in Great Falls, MT on June 15, 1930 to Herbert John and Agnes Mary (Williams) Novotný. After Herbert perished as a volunteer firefighter in Montana’s Waldron Creek Fire on August 25, 1931, Dorothy’s mother married Beatrice “Bea” Parker, a member of the Union Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded by Dorothy’s grandmother. Bea legally adopted Jane and Dorothy Novotný and raised them as his own. Faith in God, music, and worship were a large part of Dorothy’s life. She also loved to hunt and fish with her dad, and her family was known as charitable in Great Falls, sharing game or produce from their garden and inviting neighborhood kids and travelers to sit at their dinner table.

Dorothy Parker served as a PI3, Printer Petty Officer 3rd Class, in the United States Navy during the Korean War as an ambulance driver, a photographer, and a printer. She married the love of her life, William Adolph Hines, who served in the United States Army. Dorothy was passionate about life and the welfare of children. She loved The Arts and welcomed opportunities to volunteer to help others. Known for creating art to give away to family and friends, she also donated her artwork to charitable organizations, taught arts & crafts to schoolchildren and to seniors as a form of therapy, was a Girl Scout Troop Leader in Pacoima, CA and Derry, NH for all four daughters, and she created the Alzheimer’s Unit at Daybreak Senior Care in Wheatridge, CO. Dorothy loved adventure and enjoyed traveling to experience different people and cultures, and she welcomed any occasion to celebrate with her many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, and friends.

She is survived by her four daughters Deborah and her husband Mikeilah “Mikki” Kennedy-LeFae, Pahmela and her husband Thomas “Tomás” Mendoza, Carlotta Hines-Millyard and her husband Nick Millyard, and Alicia Dawn Hines; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren William Avery Smith, his wife Tamika, and their children Avery and Delia Whitney, Chelsea White, her fiancé John Taylor, and their children Naya Gabrielle Irene and John Michael Jr., Emma Whitney Perry, Sasha White and her son Amar’e Austin, Brittney Morgan White, Sydney Jayne Hines, and Adyn William Hines; her siblings Ruth McLendon of Sylmar, CA, Wade Parker of Henderson, NV, Phyllis Parker of Lakewood, and their sons, daughters, and grandchildren; extended family Courtney White Sr., his wife Nichole, and their children Jaisen, Courtney Jr., and Jordyn; Elizabeth “Betty” (Mendoza) White and her daughter Meghan White, Isabelle (Valmont) Blanchette of Manchester, N.H., Rejean “Reggie” Blanchette of Deerfield, N.H., and their children Khalil, Kyra, Maya; and her many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bea and Agnes Parker, her biological father Herbert John Novotný, her beloved husband William Adolph Hines of Derry, N.H.; her siblings Jane Harris, Stephen Parker, and Alice Parker, her brother-in-law David Lacey Hines of Chicago, IL, her granddaughter Whitney Alise White; and her nephew Gary Washington of Boulder.
