Born May 26, 1965 in Ottumwa, Iowa, Doug spent his most of his life in Spencer, Iowa. After graduating high school, Doug spent time in Florida and then onto Loyola Marymount College in Virginia. He received a BA in Business Administration while working at AT&T, where he met his wife, Mary. He was promoted to Project Manager at AT&T and relocated to Westminster, Colorado. Their family grew quickly after moving to Colorado when their son Douglas arrived. After several years at AT&T/Lucent Technologies/Avaya, Doug joined the City of Westminster in their IT department working on various projects. He was most proud of his involvement in the implementation of video courts in both the City of Westminster and Adams County.
Doug had a love for the outdoors, especially camping and hunting. He started the BMX Club in Spencer as a youngster and that love of BMX propelled him to riding dirt bikes. He also enjoyed Scouting, baseball and served as an altar boy at their local parish. There was never a dull moment in the Drake household because of the adventurous spirit of the Drake siblings.
The love of the outdoors and spending time with his son brought Dad and Son to join the Boy Scouts in Westminster. The Drake boys enjoyed the Boy Scouts High Adventure camps traveling to Florida for Sea Base, Philmont in New Mexico, Canyonlands in Utah and many other Rocky Mountain hiking and camping adventures. Doug especially loved working with the Scouts as Assistant Scout Master and Merit Badge Counselor. He mentored several Scouts - including his son – to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Doug also worked on his leadership skills earning his Wood Badge, the highest level of adult Scout leader training.
Doug was devoted to his Catholic faith, becoming a Brother with the Knights of Columbus Council 7502.
