George Smith Lane, 82, passed away early on Tuesday morning, October 18, 2022, with his loving wife Marie at his side, following a lengthy battle in the ICU against respiratory complications. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, George will be remembered for his positive attitude, kindness, inquisitiveness to learn new things, and his passion for meeting and understanding people of all backgrounds.
Born in Bay City, Texas on Thursday, February 22, 1940, to Robert Henry and Allie Mae Lane, George spent his youth in Bay City until enlisting in the United States Army at age 18 in the early days of the Vietnam War. After serving his country, George returned to Bay City and married his first wife, Billy Sue Reese. They had three sons together: Robert, Clifford (who passed away shortly after birth), and Brandon. George attended the Wharton Community College before embarking on a career with NL Baroid, an oil servicing company. He started as a manual laborer with the company and then transitioned to serving as an oil hand on drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and later in Nigeria and Libya.
After years of hard work, he was promoted into management and was transferred to Lebanon where he met and married the love of his life, Maro “Marie” Minas Hagopian. Fleeing Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War, he continued with NL Baroid in Athens, Greece, where their two sons Connie and Charles were born. George and his family also lived in Cairo, Egypt; Rome, Italy; London, England; and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where he served as a General Manager, before retiring from NL Baroid after 43 years. Upon retirement, he and Marie moved to Denver, Colorado.
George loved meeting people and fostering friendships. Not one to simply lump people together, he saw everyone as individuals and believed in their innate goodness. He was inherently selfless, believed in fairness and doing what was right over selfishness. He enjoyed spending quality time with friends and family. On the lighter side, he loved riding his motorcycle, exercising, and walking with Stella, their beloved family dog.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend a funeral service by Ter Serop Azarian, Celebrant on Monday, December 12, at St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church, 5555 S. Yosemite St., Greenwood Village, CO 80111.
George will go to his final resting place at 1:00 pm in a private burial service in the Military Section at Fairmont Cemetery, 430 S. Quebec St., Denver, CO 80247.
George is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marie; sister Betty; and three sons, George Brandon Lane (Michelle) of Lake Jackson, Texas, Connie Mark Lane (Shoshannah) of West Point, New York, and Charles Henry Lane (Sioir) of Geneva, Switzerland. He was preceded in death by his sister Barbara and his son Clifford Troy. His legacy also continues through his four grandchildren: Zach, JonJon, Lilly, and Chloe.
George’s family is deeply grateful to the staff and team of the Presbyterian/Saint Luke’s Medical Center of Denver for their efforts in his final days. The nurses, staff, and doctors there were tremendous and caring.
In his memory we will gather at 2:30 pm in the Community Room at 2700 Cherry Creek South Drive, Denver, CO 80209, ground level for refreshments and to celebrate George’s life.
