Harold Eugene “Gene” Stevenson passed away at home from cancer on November 13, 2020, the day after his 71st birthday. Gene was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University where he met his wife of 50 years Marilyn “Lyn” Steinke Stevenson. At Iowa State he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He kept in touch with several fraternity brothers over the years and always remained a loyal “Pike”.
He worked in the financial services industry most of his life, first for Great West Life which brought him to Denver in 1980, and then TIAA until he retired 5 years ago.
He and Lyn raised two sons, James “Jim” Stevenson (Jamie) of Anaheim, California and John Stevenson (Krissy) of Aurora, Colorado. Gene was very proud of his sons and their accomplishments as successful young men. They and their spouses have provided him with 5 grandchildren whom he loved and enjoyed, and it gave him so much pleasure to be “Papa Gene” to them.
Gene was an avid sports fan who liked following local sports teams including the Rockies and Broncos, and his alma mater Iowa State Cyclones. He enjoyed coaching his sons in recreational sports when they were young. His competitive nature led him to enjoy a game of pool or darts and fantasy football with friends. He loved playing Monopoly every Christmas, and Gene and Lyn played bridge with 3 other couples regularly for 30 years. He was passionate about golf, and after retirement could be found on a golf course several times a week. He was a longtime member of the Meadow Hills Golf Course Men’s Club.
He loved travel, and he and Lyn took many memorable trips abroad and, in the U.S., He also enjoyed gardening. His love of hot spicy food led him to grow an assortment of peppers every year, and he regularly made his special brand of spicy snack mix for friends and family.
He is survived by his brother Larry Stevenson and sister Terri Dunshee, both of Ames, Iowa. He will be missed by his wife, sons and daughters in law, his grandchildren, his siblings, his nieces and nephews, his golf buddies, his bowling team, and numerous friends.
