It is with great sadness that the family of Howard Fred Taborsky announce his unexpected passing on May 4th, 2023.
Howard was born in Manhattan, New York in July of 1935. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emily and Lawrence, and his brother, Edward.
Howard Is survived by Shirley (wife) the love of his life for 64 years and his son, Scott.
After graduating high school, Howard joined the Army. He completed a tour of duty in Korea before his next assignment brought him to The Mountain and Cold Weather Training Command located at Camp Hale in Leadville, Colorado. While there, he became a mountaineering instructor and was proficient in both alpine/cross-country skiing and attained the rank of Sergeant.
After 3 years in the military, Howard found his true calling — law enforcement. He began his career with the Colorado Springs Police Department. Howard later joined the Denver Police Department in 1959 and he remained there for the next 30 years in the Patrol Division and attained the rank of Sergeant. It was also during this time that Howard attended Metropolitan State College and obtained his bachelor's degree in Criminology.
Howard was very sociable and enjoyed the interaction with other people. For that reason, after retiring from the police department, he worked an additional 11 years at both the Bear Valley and Littleton YMCA. This satisfied his need to be around other people along with the added benefits of a weight room and racquetball- he provided instruction in both areas.
Throughout his life, Howard remained physically active. He was a trophy winning handball player and when he later moved on to racquetball, he routinely defeated opponents less than half his age. He also enjoyed running and participated in several marathons and hill climbs. Howard also enjoyed hiking- he and Shirley travelled all over the state in search of that next great adventure on foot.
In his later years, Howard became an avid reader of crime thrillers, science fiction and western books.
Howard was a great supporter of the Flight for Life Program at St Anthony's Hospital. This was due to his belief that a close friend's life was saved after a serious accident because of the quick response and return of the helicopter to the hospital.
