Jason Hicks

January 31, 1972 — June 15, 2022

Jason Andrew Hicks, 50, of Greenwood Village, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

Born in 1972 in Boulder, Colorado to Cindy and John Hicks, he was the oldest of four siblings. He grew up in Homestead riding bikes, playing sports and only once causing a small field fire. Along with a group of lifelong friends, he graduated from Cherry Creek High School where he played varsity golf and baseball.

He met Amy Bittmann in 1993. They had grown up blocks from each other and attended the same high school, but never officially met. He liked to point out he knew her, but she didn’t pay attention to him because he was a year younger. They were married in Denver in 1996.

Jason received his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa society. He earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado Health Science Center, where he also completed his pathology residency, a fellowship and was chief resident.

He began his professional career at Swedish Medical Center. In 2005, he and his growing family moved to Texas for one year but returned to his beloved Colorado. He was constantly learning and teaching himself new hobbies: he built golf clubs and liked to spend time with his son tinkering with dirt bikes and his 1968 Mustang. He also had an entrepreneurial side and in 2015 he began his own practice: Rocky Mountain Pathology Consultants, followed by a clinical laboratory, Rocky Mountain Labs. He was a member of Most Precious Blood parish and spent several years on the finance committee. Last year he coached the high school boys golf team at Jefferson Academy High School. He was dedicated to helping people and loved fielding medical questions to many in the community.

His family was his greatest accomplishment. He never missed a chance to cheer his daughters at swim or gymnastics meets, or caddy for his son in a golf tournament. He enjoyed fishing, skiing, travel and family.  Jason was passionate for golf and could crush a drive. (He was overjoyed when his son started out-driving him.) He loved planning family vacations and golf weekends with Tom and their golf buddies. The large open kitchen and big back yard at their home, known as the “farm”, became the family’s favorite place for holiday dinners and birthday celebrations.

He could usually be found carrying a 48-oz cup of Coca-Cola from the nearest convenience store and was constantly losing his keys. (They were most often found in his unlocked—and sometimes running—car).

Jason is survived by his wife Amy and their three incredible children: Grace, Thomas and Samantha; his mother Cindy Owens (Bob), sisters Hadley Johnson (Tim) and Meaghan O’Donnell (Kevin) and brother Tyler Hicks (Elise Fields); parents in-law Bruce and Karen Bittmann and Christopher and Susan King; in-laws Brian Bittmann (Jessica) and Emily Vatter (Scott) and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward John Hicks and niece Mary Mae Bittmann.

A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 28 at 1pm at Most Precious Blood in Denver. A reception will follow at the parish center.

Jason struggled on and off with anxiety for many years but succumbed after a fierce six-month fight. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name :
