John C. Staley passed away on August 14, 2020 at Porter’s Adventist Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He was born October 16, 1933 to Samuel R. Staley and Margaret Staley (Nuckolls) in Granby, Colorado. He grew up in Lakewood, Colorado where he attended Mountair School from the 1st through 12th grade. He was class president throughout high school and valedictorian his senior year. He earned an academic scholarship at both the University of Denver and the University of Colorado. He selected CU, where he graduated from the business school in 1955. He earned his CPA and worked his entire career in auditing, accounting and for 32 years as the Controller at Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (W.I.C.H.E.). He served in the Army from April 16, 1956 to April 16, 1958 in Germany. Ten days later, on April 26th, he married Eva Glenn, the love of his life. He and Eva have lived in the same house in Denver, Colorado since 1961 where they raised their three daughters.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Cheryl Staley, sister’s Lola Hawthorne and Gladys Wells. He is survived by his wife Eva Staley, daughter’s Karen Waller (Ken), Diane Wiegers (John), brother Walt Staley (Mary Ann), four grandchildren, Jill Wiegers, Danielle McCann (Trent), Dustin Wiegers (Jessica), Tyler Waller (Shae), five great grandchildren, Kylie McCann, Kynzie McCann, Brynlee Waller, Tucker Waller, Zeke Wiegers, two step great grandchildren, Jacob Espinosa, Christopher Espinosa and many nieces and nephews.
John was a “great” fan of CU sports teams, the Avalanche, the Broncos and the Rockies. He had been the Treasurer of his church for almost 60 years. He sang in the church choir. He and his wife were avid Square Dancers for 20 years. Most of all he loved his family, his church and life itself. He will be missed by all of them.
