Ken Smith

December 15, 1953 — October 27, 2019

Kenneth ""Ken"" Walter Smith made his transition on October 27, 2019 at the age of 65 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was born on December 15, 1953 in Lubbock, Texas.

He is survived by his twin daughters, Abigail and Emily Smith, of Arvada, CO. He is preceded in death by his parents, Presley and Lera Smith. Ken served 18 months in the Marine Corps before he was medically discharged. Despite his short time in the service, he was extremely proud to have served his country.

After his service time, he followed in the family talent of cabinetmaking, which took him into the kitchen and bath industry where he was a designer for over 40 years and eventually led to his Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer (CMKBD) Certification. His career started in Lubbock, Texas and he moved to Long Island, New York, where he had a gift store that complimented his kitchen design and installation business.

He later moved to Colorado, where his family vacationed when he was young. He always dreamed of living near the mountains and being able to continue fly-fishing. Despite a diagnosis of Stargardt's in his early 30's, a form of macular degeneration, he never let that slow him. He just adapted, using magnification equipment and making tools for his tools so that he could continue to build things in his shop. Many who knew him would say it was hard to believe he was legally blind. His workmanship was, and will always remain, like no other.

When he was 50 yrs old, he became a dad to twin girls, Abigail and Emily with his former wife, Tanja. Those girls were the light, love, and pride of his life. At the time of his passing, they were only 15 ½ years old. Even though their marriage ended, Ken and Tanja remained good friends and even better co-parents to their daughters. He always referred to Tanja as his MIP (Most Important Person). Everything he did was for his daughters.

The void we feel by his absence will be filled by the memories of his life. The impact he had on everyone who had the honor of knowing him will go on forever and in that, we can find solace. Let us celebrate all the gifts he gave each of us, even those who never personally met him, knowing all is well. He is free of his body and he can see clearly now.
