Liesel Skrien, 78, passed away unexpectedly on April 28, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 28, 1938 in Pirmasens, Germany. She was the daughter of the late, Friedrich and Blondina (Rothaar) Reiser. Liesel lived and worked in Germany, France, England, Italy, Portugal and Spain. During her time in Spain, she met James Skrien and eventually moved to the United States in 1965 to start her married life with him. Together they shared 52 happy years of marriage. With their son, Steve, and daughter, Michelle, they lived in several states (due to Jim's career demands) before permanently settling in Aurora, CO in 1979. Liesel loved education and learning. She received her Bachelor's Degree and teaching certificate from Metro State prior to receiving her Master's Degree from CU Boulder in Comparative Literature. She used her degree to teach for a short period at CU Boulder. She was also a substitute teacher in the city of Aurora. She had several hobbies, which included: needle point, Norwegian rosemaling, reading, singing, geology and learning and speaking seven different languages: German, French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Norwegian. Liesel and Jim enjoyed traveling. They visited Eurasia, Egypt, New Zealand, Australia, and Costa Rica. They also traveled extensively within the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. In addition to her husband, Jim, Liesel is survived by her son, Steve Skrien and his wife, Kat; her daughter, Michelle Mena and her husband Sean; and her grandson, Aiden Mena. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11AM at Horan & McConaty HeartLight Center, 11150 E Dartmouth Ave. Aurora, CO 80014.
