Patricia A. Sullivan always had a smile for her family, her friends, colleagues, neighbors, acquaintances, and countless strangers. She passed at home peacefully, gently smiling in her sleep on August 30, 2021 she was 91.
Pat was born November 5, 1929 to Dr. William F [D 1969] and Ruth A [D 1988] McCarthy. She grew up in Missouri enjoying and exploring the outdoors with her siblings, Eileen, Bill, and Mick [D 1991].
Her studies took her to Creighton University where she met her true love Timothy D. Sullivan [D 1972]. They married and raised a family of six in Englewood, Colorado, Kate (John), Colleen (Ken), Patsy, Tim (Tina), Ruth (Steven) and Theresa [D 1969]. As a young widow she learned to forge her way in the world with hard work and steadfast determination to enjoy everyday, one day at a time.
She imparted that wisdom to her students at Clayton College For Boys (an orphanage now known as Clayton Early Learning) where she taught for 10 years in the 70’s and 80’s. While teaching she discovered an interest in the geosciences. That interest and her pride in attention to fine topography detail lead to her long career in the mapping department at American Geophysical Corporation where she enjoyed helping the business expand. She retired in 2016 to spend time in her garden.
Children always gave her great pleasure. She dearly enjoyed her grandsons Michael and Joe and the time she spent with her great grand children Elijah, Aiden and Heather. She also enjoyed connecting with her nieces and nephews over the years.
Throughout her life she stayed physically active by learning new things like scuba diving, downhill skiing, river rafting, bowling, and ballroom dancing but she always liked the water best and spoke fondly about growing up near the lake swimming every chance she got. She loved learning a new hobby, became a skilled cake decorator, took great pride in her sewing and she even learned to repair stained glass windows. More than anything she enjoyed spending hours gardening or reading.
Pat always liked to take a ‘good walk’! It would have pleased her to know you took a walk and reflected on her with your thoughts or prayers and a smile for her. Her family will miss her but will take comfort in knowing she lived a happy life and laughed often and genuinely from her heart.
