Richard (Dick) James Morroni, age 95, died at his home on December 9th, 2022.
Richard was born on October 26th, 1927, in Denver, Colorado, and was the son of Anthony James and Teresa [Scarcelli] Morroni. Dick spent the first years of his life at 375 Lincoln Street in Denver in a house with his parents, his grandfather Louis, his three aunts (Mary, Amelia, and Jenny), and his two uncles (Joe and Bob). Dick and his family ate pasta twice a week. He once remarked that little was said at the dinner table. “I just shoveled like crazy,” he recalled, “and didn’t say anything.”
Dick started working in his father’s electrical motor repair and supply business at the age of 6, sweeping the floor, sorting nuts and bolts, and (reportedly) “eating lunch....” After graduating from Regis High School and then the University of Colorado at Boulder Engineering School, Dick worked as an electrical engineer at his father’s renamed Denver business: Electric Equipment and Engineering Company (EEE). Richard would work there another 68 years designing, testing, engineering, manufacturing, and installing a variety of electrical equipment including switchboards, voltage regulators, control panels, and standby generators. Dick retired from EEE in 2017, at age 90.
Richard met his dear wife, Marjorie Elaine Farney at the University of Colorado. Dick claimed that he presented her an engagement ring in an old sack and that she was “surprised” and said yes. At Marj’s request, Dick designed a wedding announcement: he crafted a blueprint radio circuit reporting that “Marj and Dick are Engaged!” The two were married on January 21, 1951, and made their home in Denver. They had 4 children: Karen (Sue), Craig, Mike, and Cheryl (Sheri). Dick and Marjorie celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary before Marj died in 2000.
Richard always had something witty to say, and his humor was a large part of his big heart. He was loved and appreciated by so many, and respected by business associates across the country.
Dick studied current events and was involved in many conservative initiatives, working tirelessly to expose political tyranny and government abuse. He often wrote letters to newspapers and businesses on personalized stationery which had the following quote from Thomas Paine (1777): “Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must undergo the fatigue of supporting it.”
A lifelong Catholic and daily Mass attendee, Dick was, for the past 37 years, a member of St. James Catholic Church in Denver. His faith was central to his life, as was his family and his work. Richard was incredibly generous to many people, and supported several charities especially those involving Catholic education and pro-life work.
Dick is survived by his four children, twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, his brother, and numerous nieces and nephews.
