Robert “Gus” Lofquist, 96, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2022. Robert was born to Ragnor and Olga (Ring) Lofquist on March 9, 1926, in Leadville, Colorado. As a young boy he was given the nickname “Gus”, which he always joked Gus was short for Robert, and it stuck throughout his life. At the age of 17 he joined the Navy amid World War II and spent most of his service time in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to Leadville, Colorado where he graduated high school and soon after, married the love of his life, Betty Stevens on September 22, 1946. The two would remain married for over 64 years until her death in February 2011. Gus and Betty would go on to have a daughter, Sandra and continue to live in Leadville until 1961 when they moved “down the mountain” to Westminster, Colorado where he lived for the last 60+ years. They would eventually buy a home in Hyland Greens in 1977 where Gus lived for over 40 years until he moved into an assisted living facility in 2019 where he would live out the rest of his life. Gus worked as an accountant for a smelter operation in Leadville and then for Asarco when they moved to Westminster until his retirement in 1986.
Throughout his life, Gus was active in recreational softball, bowling leagues, and golf leagues (he even managed to hit one hole-in-one). During his retirement, you would often find him on the golf course 2-3 times per week, in addition to the weekly bowling league that he and Betty participated in for many years. He was a lifelong member of the Elks (78 years), with the last 30+ as a member of the local Westminster chapter. He and Betty would go to dinner with their “Tuesday night group” for many years and frequent several restaurants in the Denver metro area including one his favorites, the Wishbone in Westminster where the staff knew him by name (and probably his order). He was a diehard Colorado Rockies fan through thick and thin, watching every game he could and resorting to listening to every game on the radio over the last few years after he lost his sight. He loved his family dearly. You would often find him at any and all school and sporting events for his great grandkids as they were growing up.
Gus was preceded in death by his brothers, Ragnor “Rugs”, August “Auggie” and sisters Viola “Vi” and Regina, who died as a child. He is survived by his daughter Sandra (Gary), granddaughters Stacey (Thomas) and Jodie (Richard), 5 great grandchildren: Tyler (Rachel), Alexander, Ryan (Mackenna), Amy, and Michael, 4 great, great grandchildren: Titus, Talon, Trevin and Reagan, his sister Eleanor and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather and friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to have known him.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request you consider a donation to one of the following charities that Gus was a constant supporter of: Honor Flight Network, National World War II Museum, VFW, or the Wounded Warriors
