Sarah Akerly

October 14, 1965 — December 19, 2021

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Sarah Akerly. On Sunday, December 19, 2021 at the age of 56, with her husband and two of their children by her side, Sarah fell asleep in the Lord.

Sarah will be affectionately remembered by the entirety of her world. She was born in Los Angeles, California on October 14th, 1965.  She loved God and was devoted to serving Christ, despite her troubled and difficult early years as an abused child.  Regardless, her legacy was to choose love, kindness, and consideration for others. Her intent was always to do the right thing, even if it was the hard thing.  Anyone who spent time with her, experienced these traits fearlessly, especially her children and grandchildren with whom she worked hard to instill those qualities.

In the summer of 1981, at the age of 15, she met Terry Akerly at a church youth group event.  They began their imperfect love story a year later, both at the age of 16.  Terry and Sarah married in April of 1987. They began building their home together in California, raising three children; Michael (34), Racquel (33), and Jonathan (32).  In 1991 they moved to Colorado and their family became complete with the birth of their son Jarred (30).  Sarah served as the Executive Secretary of the Assumption of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Glendale, Colorado.  Sarah is survived by her children; Michael (Keah) Akerly, Racquel (Benjamin) Arnold, Jonathan Akerly, and Jarred Akerly as well as seven grandchildren; Alysia, Dionysios, Autumn, Andonea, Raphael, Leilani, and Milo, and many extended family members, all of whom loved her dearly.

If you knew Sarah, you know that there is no such thing as a “rhetorical question,” because she was too honest with her words for generic answers.  You know she spoke her mind and had the best and honest intentions.  Sarah was a good person; the type of good person people don’t believe exist, unless you met her.  This is why working as the Executive Secretary at Assumption Cathedral was perfect.  She enjoyed her job as well as the interactions with staff and visitors very much.  Which proved obvious in her infectious smile.  Her ability to light up every room she walked into and make anyone feel like they were the most important person who mattered in that given time.

Sarah was known for her cackling laugh, her resilient will power, and loving her family with every fiber of her being.  Love was her superpower and she perfected her craft.  We are heartbroken and hurting, but we are also left with imprints and memories that could not have been embedded by anyone else. May her memory be eternal.

Funeral services will be held at the Assumption of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Metropolis Cathedral at 4610 E. Alameda Ave, Glendale, CO 80246 on Monday, January 10th, 2022 at 11:00am.
