Stuart Sanderson

1951 — January 1, 2022

We are saddened to announce the death of Stuart Sanderson, who passed away on December 10, 2022 at the age of 71. After suffering an unexpected brain hemorrhage in September, Stuart was later diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Though he fought hard to recover from the damage caused by the initial bleed, he passed away just after midnight – on the same day as his father twenty-four years ago – surrounded by his family and the caring, compassionate staff of Littleton Adventist Hospital.

Stuart, an only child, was born to Harold and Mabel Sanderson in Arlington, Virginia in September of 1951. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Rochester in New York, and his Juris Doctor from American University in Washington, D.C.

In September of 1988, while working in Denver as a solicitor for The Department of the Interior, Stuart met Janice. By January of 1989, Stuart and Janice had moved back to the Washington, D.C. area and Stuart was working for the American Mining Congress. They were married on October 7, 1989. Soon after, they welcomed a daughter, Jessica, in the fall of 1990 and later a son, Timothy, in the summer of 1993.

In October of 1994, Stuart accepted the position of President and CEO of the Colorado Mining Association, an organization which he led for over twenty years. Stuart rarely had idle hands. Even in retirement, he continued his advocacy for the mining industry through his work at the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration.

Stuart was passionate about travel. His journeys brought him to all fifty states and to many different countries, often bringing his family with him so they, too, could see and enjoy the world.

Throughout his life, Stuart loved the outdoors. In his younger years he was an Eagle Scout and he enjoyed hiking and camping. His connection with nature did not wane but rather evolved as he aged. While he found hiking mountains more difficult, he still experienced nature through daily walks with his wife and beloved dog Draco, the occasional journey to the bluffs by his home, and through his many golf games with friends. Stuart was known for his friendliness, dry wit and goofy humor. He would often take excessive advantage of mulligans while golfing, which led to his friends joking that taking a mulligan was “taking a Sanderson.”

While Stuart was an outgoing individual who was at ease delivering speeches to a crowd, he felt the most comfortable at home with his wife, reading a book or the newspaper with his dog on the ottoman, keeping his feet warm. His appreciation for the small moments in life was great. Almost every day, he would stand outside on the deck, pause for a few moments, and admire the view of the mountains. When traveling by car, Stuart would always comment on the beautiful scenery, no matter the location.

Stuart was a loving father and dedicated husband throughout his life and will be sorely missed. He is succeeded by his wife Janice, his daughter Jessica, son-in-law Bryce and his son Tim. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Littleton Adventist Hospital or to the American Red Cross.
