Adele Chavez Kaferly

Adele ""Dell"" (Chavez) Kaferly of Denver, Colorado, died on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 under the care of hospice. Adele was born in Pueblo, Colorado on March 26, 1920, to Jose Adan & Amalia (Valdez) Chavez. She lived with her family on a farm in Ordway, Colorado until she went to nursing school in Pueblo CO. She enlisted in the US Navy, becoming one of the first WAVEs during World War II, and was stationed in Cleveland OH. While in the Navy, she met her husband George Kaferly of Chicago on a blind date, and they were married on October 16, 1945. They lived in Chicago, Oak Park, and River Forest, Illinois, until they moved to Denver in 1964, where they built the home they lived in for the next 46 years. Adele was a founding member of the Church of the Risen Christ Catholic Church in Denver. She returned to school at age 52, and earned her BSN degree. In addition to her nursing profession, she was a lover of music, played the piano by ear, was a Girl Scout Leader, had many devoted friends of all ages, knitted and crocheted blankets and hats for her family, took her daughters to Chicago Cubs games on ""Lady's Day"", loved to go antiquing and refinish furniture, was a creative water color artist, and a wonderful cook and baker. Always determined and energetic, she was a breast cancer survivor at age 62. After George retired, they traveled extensively, visiting the U.K., Ireland, Spain, Italy, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Greece, Germany and Hawaii. She is survived by her beloved husband of 70 years, George Kaferly, her daughters Barbara (Dale) Buckley, Adele Kaferly (Loren Leys), Diane Kaferly, and Christine Kaferly, her grand-children Donald Jones (Kristen Elliott), Olivia Kaferly (Christoph Kammel), and Sarah Adele Leys, and by great grandchildren Emma Jones and Sydney Jones. She is also survived by brothers Joseph (Maxine) Chavez, Percy (Bernice) Chavez, and sister Margaret (Tom) Minjarez. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Stella (Mike) Chavez, Polly (Tony) Gomes, and Molly Martinez. She is further survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Special thanks to Tambra Woods, MD, Front Range Internal Medicine, and Kimberly Clark and the nursing and hospice staff at Brookdale Roslyn Senior Living. A rosary and visitation will be on Monday, April 18 at Horan & McConaty's Family Chapel, 11150 E. Dartmouth Av., Aurora, CO 80014, from 5-7 p.m. with the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, April 19 at 10 AM at Church of the Risen Christ Catholic Church, followed by a reception. Internment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Horan & McConaty Funeral Services, 11150 E Dartmouth Ave., Aurora CO. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Samaritan House Homeless Shelter, Catholic Charities, in Denver would be appreciated.
