Allan Winfield Carlin was born on October 7,1933 in Wiley, Colorado to Wilber Earl and Luella Blanche Carlin. He enjoyed building model ships, cars and planes as a kid and was an accomplished flyer of control-line airplanes. The family moved to nearby Lamar and he attended Lamar Union High School (back when they were the Lamar Savages instead of the Lamar Thunder). After graduating with honors at age 16 in 1950, he headed for the University of Colorado for his undergrad degree. Upon graduation in 1954, he headed to Medical School at the University of Michigan (since Johns Hopkins didn’t have a football team). At Michigan, he managed the apartments were he lived and taught anatomy to nursing students (an impressive $500 in 1955). Leaving Michigan in 1958, he started he work at St. Joseph and then Denver General and then Presbyterian Hospital, where he met and married a nurse, Shirley Jean Johnson. Allan and Shirley had Lucinda Gayle (Cindy) in 1961, Roger Allan in 1962 and Barry Winfield in 1965. Allan was drafted into the Army in 1967 as a Captain, leaving Viet Nam as the commander of the 29th Evacuation Hospital, , 44th Medical Brigade, Can Tho, at the end of 1969 as a Lt. Col. Allan worked largely out of Lutheran Medical Center since it’s start, from 1962 through 1998, interrupted only by his military service, and continuing to read EKGs until he was 87. Allan enjoyed many trips to Lake Powell and Mexico with his family and friends and was an easy mark whenever a trip for an airshow was suggested. Allan served as an Elder of the Lakewood Church of Christ for an accumulated 27 years and went on spiritual and medical mission trips to India, Nicaragua and Guatemala. In retirement, Allan spent a lot of time trying to master the game of golf, time well spent with many friends. Allan died on July 21, 2023, at home with his family, realizing the anticipations mentioned by Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:9 – “ However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” — the things God has prepared for those who love him”.
