Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend Amjad “MJ” Umari passed away on June 11th, 2021, after a courageous 18-month battle with Glioblastoma, brain cancer. MJ will be remembered by so many people for his thoughtful, kind and loving nature, his great sense of humor, and his incredible laugh and smile.
MJ was born on September 4th, 1949, in Baghdad, Iraq, to Mumtaz and Suad Al-Omari. He formed many wonderful memories growing up with his sister Lubab. As a young boy, he traveled through many countries in Europe with his mother. He attended a Jesuit school for high school and completed college in Iraq with a degree in Engineering. He then received a scholarship to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. It is at Cornell where MJ met the love of his life, Marilyn. They married in October of 1974 and were married for 46 years. After earning his PhD in Civil Engineering, MJ started a 40+ year career with the U.S. Geological Survey as a Hydrologist. He loved riding his bike and would bike to and from work every day for years, even in snow and ice. MJ loved his chosen profession in math and science, and was devoted to the projects he worked on throughout his career.
MJ and Marilyn had two children, Ryan and Tamara (Fiancé -Chris) and one granddaughter, Kiryana (Parents- Ryan and Nyla). MJ was a very loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. He had a deep appreciation for life, and touched the lives of many friends, neighbors, and co-workers along the way. We loved him beyond words and will miss him always. We will forever carry with us the memory of a uniquely kind and caring man, with a genuine spirit, thoughtful nature, kind- hearted temperament, and daily appreciation for the gift of life.
A Celebration of Life will be held for MJ on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 11:00am at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home, 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, Colorado.
