Anthony Zarachowicz

November 17, 1953 — May 6, 2022

Anthony “Tony” Zarachowicz passed away on May 6, 2022 at his home in Westminster, Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, daughter Katie, son-in-law Brian Whalen, grandsons Otto, Rufus, and Arthur, and son Chris.

Tony was born in Syracuse, New York on November 17, 1953 to Anthony Leo Zarachowicz (1923-1998) and Lucy (Habarek) Zarachowicz (1925-2002). He spent his formative years there, pedaling his bicycle and playing trumpet in the Cicero High School band. He met Stephanie Mitchell in 1974 as a blind date; they married in 1978 and she remained by his side until the very end. Tony worked for the US Postal Service for 38 years, much of that time as the Postmaster in Groton, New York where he was a familiar face to everyone in that small community. After he retired, he could often be found at the Groton Cycle Center teaching classes, working the books, and frankly, shooting the sh*t. Tony moved to Colorado in 2014 once grandchildren entered the picture.

Tony was skilled at starting up conversations with anyone, especially people who liked dogs or rode motorcycles. He was a great storyteller and loved to make others laugh. He was skilled at hunting down a bargain and would talk at length about his finds. He had a big personality, a booming voice, and a tender heart. He will be missed immensely.

Tony’s brother, Leo Edward Zarachowicz, predeceased him in late 2019. Tony’s final wish was to celebrate both of their lives and a joint memorial will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at Twin Trees Too, 1029 Milton Ave, Syracuse, NY 13204. Family and friends of Tony and Leo are welcome to attend.
