Ardis Imogene Nuss

February 17, 1933 — November 28, 2018

Ardis Imogene Fuhrman (Ardie) was born in Cortland, Nebraska on February 17, 1933. Her family moved to Wilber, Nebraska in 1935.

Ardie grew up in a wonderful family with her brother Dr. Jerry Fuhrman and sister Judy Ebbers. Wilber is a small rural town, south of Lincoln, with an outstanding school district. The High School had many opportunities for the students and Ardie took advantage of many of them. She acted in school plays, won many group singing competitions, played clarinet in the High School Band, attended Lutheran Church every Sunday and played the piano for soloists. Ardie had a beautiful voice. She won 4-H blue ribbons singing in a Quartet at the State Fair as a Junior in High School. As a Senior in High School, she sang in a Trio that won all local and regional singing competitions. She and the trio then sang on national television on the Paul Whitman Orchestra Show TV Show.

Ardie entered the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1951 and was a member of the Gamma Phi Sorority. After two years, she taught 4th Grade in Nebraska City, Nebraska. After working one year and saving most of her income, she returned to University of Nebraska for her junior and senior years. During those two years, she worked at the University of Nebraska in the Conference and Institutes Center. During this time, she had an escape with death during a home burglary, along with having all her saved tuition money for one semester stolen.

Ardie visited her brother in fall of 1957 at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine where he was a freshman medical student. She met Donald (Don) at a Phi Rho Fraternity House Party and it was love at first sight for Ardie and Don. Don graduated on June 18, 1958 and they were married the next day on June 19th ... their great 60 year adventure had begun. They drove to the U.S Army Madigan General Hospital at Fort Lewis Washington for Don's internship and moved the next year for Don's three-year Dermatology Residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Ardie immediately adapted to the Army social life and made many good friends. She volunteered at the hospital and, as a young officer's wife, was the treasurer for the very large Army Physician's Wives Club at Brooke Army Medical Center. During this time Ardie and Don had their first son, Randall (Randy).

Their next duty was at Fort Leonard Wood Army Hospital, Missouri for two years. Their second son, Rodney (Rod), was born during this assignment.

Don received a call from the U.S Army Surgeon General's Office. ""Would you like to go to Germany for three years"" Ardie said ""Yes we would like to go."" Then another wonderful adventure! With Rod (three months old) and Randy (three years old), they drove to Wilber, Nebraska and then to New York City with no children's car seats in the 1963 Rambler. They boarded a troop ship at the Port of Embarkation. Rod slept on luggage with blankets and pillows in the middle of two train bunks. Ardie slept all night with hands on baby Rod. Randy slept with Don in the bunk bed. After a few days on the ocean, the family disembarked in northern Germany, in the dark of night, and boarded a night time train ride to Landstuhl Army Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany. They did not qualify for Army quarters but managed to rent a new beautiful duplex in the small village of Kinsbach, Germany for one year and then moved into the Army quarters. Ardie had a wonderful time volunteering in the hospital, working in the wives club, shopping socializing, and traveling with many friends. They took many wonderful trips to Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Denmark, Belgium, England and Berlin. Ardie also travelled to Czechoslovakia, behind the Iron Curtain.

Another phone call came from the Surgeon General's Office asking ""would you like to go to Fitzsimons Army Center in Denver, Colorado?"" Their response was ""Yes we would!"". The family departed Germany, flying to the east coast in September 1967. They picked up the Rambler and drove to Denver. Fitzsimons Army Hospital was another wonderful assignment and Ardie continued to enjoy and participate in the Army Social life. Don was promoted to Colonel during this time. Ardie was invaluable in Don's career in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

In June 1977, Don retired from U.S. Army and entered private practice of Dermatology at what is now known as the Aurora Regional Medical Center. Ardie worked in the office for five years and was very helpful in establishing the practice.

Ardie had many wonderful friendships in the Village East neighborhood, Heritage Eagle Bend community, and elsewhere, and loved doing many activities with them: bowling, golf, playing bridge and bunko, socializing, and singing in the Eagle Bend Community choir.

Ardie was fortunate to have had two lovely daughters-in law, Kristin (Kris) Nuss and Laura Nuss who she loved being with. She also had five Grandchildren. Jamie and Nicole (Nikki), Randy and Kris's children, and Ashley, Erich and Evan, Rod and Laura's children. She loved and adored these kids and was very involved in cheering them on at their various activities while growing up. Nothing made her happier than being with the grandkids, who knew her as Grammy.

Ardie was preceded in death by her parents Naomi and Arthur Fuhrman, and her nephew Brooks Fuhrman. She is survived by husband Donald, son Randy and wife Kristin, son Rod and wife Laura, sister and brother-in-law Judy and Dean Ebbers, brother and sister-in-law Dr. Jerry and Nancy Fuhrman, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Commander Gary and Patsy Nuss, nieces Holly Houk (Kerry), Kathy Stokes (Neil) , Mary Whit (Mike), Becky Treneff (Tracy), nephews Ryan Ebbers, Ross Ebbers (Jo Lee), Jeffrey Fuhrman (Janet), Matthew Fuhrman (Cindy), Gary Nuss (Pam),Tim Nuss (Susie), and her Grandchildren Jamie, Ashley, Nikki, Erich and Evan.

Ardie and Don celebrated their 60th anniversary in June 2018. She had a wonderful life.
