Athina Galanopoulos
June 26, 1934 – July 31, 2020
Athina was born in Athens, Greece, to Emmanuel and Malamatenia Antoniou, the youngest of 4 siblings, now all in heaven together.
During WWII German occupation of Athens, her father moved the family to the village of Mazi to live with family. Life was safer from war, but not illness, her mother passed at the village from
malaria. Her dad returned to their Athens home after the war with 4 young children.
Athina took on the homemaker role for the family, cooking, cleaning, taking care of the home for her father and siblings, Antonis, Yiannis, and Margarita.
She met Christos, her future husband and neighbor, at the age of 15. They fell in love and married in 1955. Friends told us Athina was the most beautiful girl in the neighborhood and Christos would
use the excuse of visiting her older brothers to come see her. Together, they build a home in Athens and had two children, Efthimia (Mitsi) and Harilaos (Hari).
Christos owned a factory, GALCO, Inc., in Peristeri, manufacturing hot water heaters and oil heaters, Athina was a homemaker, taking care of her family and extended relatives.
She was an amazing cook and baker, and passed on her secret recipes to her daughter, Mitsi; daughter-in-law and Goddaughter Debby; and granddaughter Patricia.
The family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1973, settling 2 houses away from Holy Trinity, among many Greek families, to help Athina adapt to life in the US. She learned English
for the first time at the age of 40 and became a proud U.S. citizen in March 1979.
Athina lost Christos very suddenly in 1987. Through this terrible loss, Athina became even more involved with her children and grandchildren, and at Holy Trinity.
She was a member of the Philoptochos, Daughters of Penelope, and Seniors ministries, and helped with the Dynamis monthly newsletter. She was always found in the kitchen
during the festival preparations and working in the pastry booth. She became an avid traveler, going to Greece, Jerusalem, and to be with her children’s families, whether
they were in CA, HI, TN, FL, WA, CO, WY, or Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. She loved going to church, church events and to all kinds of celebrations. Being so close to
church, her kitchen nook was “the place” to be for long conversations with friends, Greek coffee, and pastry.
Athina rallied following two strokes and a knee replacement, and gave such joy to her family and friends, even through her difficult health challenges. She was incredibly
strong and worked very hard to recover, giving us the gift of being with us until last Friday. She passed on peacefully in her sleep, with her children at her bedside.
Athina will be lovingly remembered by her children Efthimia/Mitsi (Mark), Harilaos/Hari
(Debby/Maria); her grandchildren Christos (Lindsy), Thomas, Patricia and Anthony; and
great grandchildren Harilaos and Greyson. Athina was preceded in death by her husband Christos, and her parents, and siblings.
