Barbara Jean Cowan, age 74, died at St. Anthony's Hospital Lakewood on Friday, November 27, 2015 in the presence of her family. Born Barbara Jean Weigand on October 20, 1941 in La Junta, Colorado. She was raised in Fowler before moving to Greeley where she finished high school and attended the University of Northern Colorado. She married William Craig Cowan on June 10, 1962 and moved to Denver where she finished her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Denver. After graduation she began working as an Art Teacher for Denver Public Schools and then Jefferson County Public Schools. She left teaching for the birth of her first son Richard Craig Cowan and 19 months later her second son Robert Neil Cowan. In 1979 she started her own cartooning business ""Let the Birds Tell it"", which she continued until 1986. In 1987 she went back to teaching and finally retired in 1994 from Normandy Elementary. Barbara was a member of the Colorado Art Guild and the Foothills Art Center. Barbara was a creative spirit who loved art, cartooning, and floral arranging. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who had sharp sense of humor and an infectious laugh. Survivors include husband Bill of Lakewood, son Craig of Lakewood, son Neil and his wife Jennifer and granddaughter Maisie of Denver, sister Pat of Flagstaff, and brother Richard of Grand Junction. Services and reception will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Horan & McConaty 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd. Lakewood, CO 80227.
