Barbara (Backman) Harmon, 73, a long time resident of Northglenn, Colorado died peacefully at home on Thursday, July 01, 2010. She was enrolled in the hospice program which made the end so much easier and bearable. Barbara was born in Torrington, Wyoming on November 10, 1936, the youngest of 8 children and grew up on a farm around Torrington. Her parents were Eva and Henry Backman, both of whom immigrated from Russia in the early 1900s. Barbara graduated from Torrington High School in 1954 and began her working career as a telephone operator. Barbara married Ken Harmon, a United States Marine (of Morrill Nebraska) in 1956 and was a military wife moving all over the United States (from South Carolina to Hawaii) every 3 years. Ken also served two combat tours in Viet Nam (1964 and 1968) so Barbara was both mother and father to her children for extended lengths of time. The Harmon family relocated to Northglenn in 1971. Barbara and Ken were divorced in 1975 and Barbara entered the work force working as a trucking company dispatcher or as office support staff until her retirement in 2001. Barbara is survived by her children Greg (Donna) Harmon of Thornton, CO, Lori West of Las Vegas, NV and Jeff (Janet) Harmon of Lexington Park, MD; and grandchildren Jordan, Kody, Andrew, Madison and Matthew Harmon, Justin, Blake and Kalie Atkins (Thornton, CO), Andrea West (Las Vegas, NV), and Christa and Katie Harmon (Lexington Park, MD).
