Barbara Jo Harrell

August 5, 1938 — September 16, 2009

Barbara Jo Harrell (McGlee) passed away in Centennial, Colorado on September 16, 2009. She was surrounded by the love of her family and by God's love. Barbara was born on August 5, 1938 in Omaha, Nebraska. She graduated with the highest honors from the University of Nebraska. Upon her graduation, she moved to Southern California where she taught Spanish and English. While living and teaching in California, she met her prince and their Marine Corp life led them to live in many states, as well as in Belgium. While living in Little Rock, Arkansas, she was known as ""Miss Barbara"" on the then popular Romper Room television show, where she racially integrated the show in the 1960's. She also served as an administrative Assistant at Red Rocks Community College in Colorado. The major part of her life was devoted to being a loving wife and to being an extraordinary mother to her three children. Barbara participated in many organizations and activities throughout her life. Her contributions were always first class. Some of her pleasures included reading, classical music, live theater, spending time with her family and nurturing her grandchildren. Travel was also a passion for her; planning the trip, taking the trip and then reflecting on it after returning home. She traveled extensively to many corners of the world and relished the knowledge she gained, the cultural immersion and the sheer adventure of the trips. She always represented America admirably as she interacted with the locals throughout the world. Barbara is survived by James T. Harrell, her loving husband of 47 years; three children, Dr. Thomas J. Harrell of Kula, Hawaii, Katherine E. (Dan) Chase of Parker, Colorado and Mary V.(Chris) Whitney of Parker, Colorado; mother, Mary M. McGlee of Cheyenne, Wyoming; sister, Nancy K. Henricksen of Joliet, Illnois; five grandchildren, Colton, Garrett and Cody Chase and Haley Anne and Cooper Whitney; two aunts, one uncle and several cousins; brother-in-law, Robert (Caroline) Harrell, West Point, Massachusetts, five nieces, two nephews, twenty-six great nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, James and Lydia McGlee; maternal grandparents, Siegfred and Emely Christensen; father, Jim R. McGlee; father-in-law and mother-in-law, J.T. and Frances Harrell; several aunts and uncles. Barbara had a unique way of inspiring those she met with her kindness, gentle nature, nurturing ways, intelligence, spirit, courage, positive attitude, joyful soul and her undying belief in God. She was the role model of all role models. Those she left behind are better human beings because of her love and her influence in their lives. The family thanks all of those who helped and accompanied Barbara on her incredible journey through life. Following Barbara's wishes, her body was cremated. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Those wishing to honor the memory of Barbara may send their donations to Porter Hospice Foundation, 7995 E. Prentice Avenue, Suite 204, Greenwood Village, Colorado 80111. Rest in peace, beautiful angel!
