Barbara Mae Hendrix (née Marquez) passed away at Lutheran Medical Center on Friday, September 22, 2023. A Denver native, “Barbi”, born May 1, 1937, grew up in Curtis Park and North Denver neighborhoods, alongside six siblings. She married Wayne Hendrix in 1958 and grew the family by adding five daughters.
Always a bright light, with an ever-present smile, she welcomed all with open arms and loving hugs. Aunt Bobbie, as she was known by her thirty-two nieces, nephews, and numerous Godchildren, always nurtured family. When she and Wayne lost their 26-month-old daughter, Wendi, in 1966, they held fast to their strong Catholic faith. Wayne and Barbi created a life together in West Denver and relocated to Lakewood in 1968. Together they built a thriving printing business, and enjoyed traveling, often with sister Rosalie and husband Sam.
They remained rooted in their Catholic faith, teaching CCD, becoming deeply involved with youth ministry and singing in a Mariachi group with Wayne. They traveled to churches in Denver and throughout Colorado, kids always in tow. She lost Wayne in 2013, after fifty-five years of marriage.
Barbi’s first love was family, immediate, extended and otherwise. In Barb’s eyes, you didn’t need to be blood to be considered part of the family. She was an amazing cook, an eagle-eyed editor, and a prolific gardener. A true sports fan, she followed all the local teams, including the Broncos, the Buffs and the Rockies – all being her “favorites.”
She is survived by:
Her brother, Tom Marquez
Her four daughters and their families:
Karen Zimmerman, grandchildren Molly & Kevin, Zachary & Claudia, and great-grandchildren Reid Strode, Mackenna Sims, Nicholas Sims
Kelli and John Holland, grandchildren Jacob & Kristin, Wendi & Ken, and Luke & Jessica, and great-grandchildren, Anthony Romero-Sullivan, Isabella Sullivan, Mya Dickinson-Holland, Scarlett Dickinson-Holland, and Orion Gorham
