Born Barbara Phyllis Powell on January 10th, 1934 she was the youngest of thirteen children born to Elizabeth and Hedley Powell of Grand Falls, Newfoundland Canada.
In 1957 she married Air Force Tech Sergeant Marvin E. Luce and moved to the United States where they had two children Elizabeth and Dennis. Widowed seven years later on January 2nd 1964, she returned to Newfoundland with her young family.
She remarried in 1966 to Ernest Hicks and had two more children, Carol and Steven. The family of six moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1969. After their divorce Barbara worked for several years as a jewelry consultant for Service Merchandise.
When the store closed she became a volunteer in the gift shop at the Medical Center of Aurora for the next fourteen years. During that time, she was able to travel the world with her good friends Barb, Carmen, Jane and Leiah. She never missed an opportunity to go bowling, play bingo, try the slots in Blackhawk, go to the movies or enjoy an afternoon with the Red Hat Ladies.
Loved by all she met, Barbara had a very big heart but unfortunately it was also a very weak heart and ultimately ended her life on January 2nd, 2019 fifty five years to the day that she lost her first husband. Her youngest children were by her side.
She is survived by her daughter Carol Hicks and son Steven Hicks of Aurora, Colorado, her son Dennis Luce and his wife Valerie and their son Miles of Sand Point Idaho, her daughter Elizabeth Luce of Bend, Oregon, her sister Beverly Rueseswald of Colorado Springs, Colorado and her sister Joyce Newhook of Grand Falls, Newfoundland Canada.
Per Barbara's wishes there will not be a Memorial Service.
Please give your condolences to the Hicks family.
