On Thursday, March 14, 2019 Barbara Rhodes, at the incredible age of 85, went home to be with the Lord and was reunited with the love of her life Mr. James Rhodes. Barbara Rhodes was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on January 7, 1934.
Barb Rhodes lived every day of her life with a smile on her face and a heart big enough to care for everybody she would ever interact with. There was not a situation in this world, an event in her life, or a tragedy too great for her to overcome as she never lost her faith in Jesus Christ. She chose to see the good in all situations and be the light that shined so bright in many people's lives. At a very young age she was left in charge of taking care of herself and her little brother. She used this as an opportunity to understand the true value in life of caring for others. When she was in high school and working at a local flower shop, she met a young man named James Rhodes who fell madly in love with her pure heart and her caring nature. She married this man at the age of 18 where they remained married for over 65 years. It is impossible to have known one without knowing the other. Through all the trials and uncertainties of this life, she constantly reassured those around her that God would always provide and conquer the darkness. She truly walked by faith every day of her life and shared that faith with everybody she knew. She showed everybody around her what it meant to love somebody unconditionally and to believe that anything was possible through our Lord. From the young age of caring for her brother, to taking care of her 4 children while her husband was serving in the Korean War when she was in her early twenties, to caring so deeply for her 22 grandchildren through all of their different accomplishments and always helping take her grandkids to Awana's or school or, her favorite, sporting events, and even caring for her 10 great grandchildren.
She never turned away a soul as long as she lived and that can be seen if you talk to anybody who ever knew her. She was never more than a phone call away and always answered when you would call. She would never make you feel like a burden and always reassured you how important you were in the eyes of Christ. She always had time to listen to others and show them God's compassion and always put family first. To Grandma, the Body of Christ was her family and she looked to expand the Body of Christ every single day. She was a servant of the Lord in every sense of the term and showed so many others how to live life every day with a smile on her face. She found great joy in keeping her family in touch through sports and even found a way to always make sure she could talk to her family by creating the Rhodes family football, baseball, basketball, and hockey pools. By doing so she was always able to show those close to her how much she cared for them and that she would always be there should they need to lean on her for comfort and advice or if they needed a good, whole-hearted laugh. In her time in this world she touched the lives of so many with her beautiful smile and laugh and her pure heart and faith. She will be missed by many as not one person has ever had a better mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and dear friend. To those who are full of grief and sorrow she would want to share this scripture; ""So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you."" - John 16:22
Barb Rhodes is survived by her 4 children, 22 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Grandma, we will miss you dearly but rejoice in the fact that you are now living your best life, hand in hand with the love of your life, James. We know that you were an Angel on Earth always protecting us with your love and prayer and we know now that you are always watching over us and protecting us with the Father. We know that you will find rest in the arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
""Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."" â Matthew 11:28
