Bernadine Ann (Boland) Horrigan, 90, of Denver, Colorado, died June 5, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living after a very recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Born August 7, 1933, in Strawberry Point, Iowa, and raised in Elkader, Iowa, she graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1949 and attended Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She then joined her three brothers in Denver, Colorado in the early 1950s. In Denver, she worked as a bookkeeper for several accountants and met her husband, Joseph, through dear friends Trish and Joe Hovorka. Bernie and Joe were married May 12, 1956, in Elkader, IA and settled in Denver to build a family with their five children.
She lived a blessed life of Catholic faith, practice, and service volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul during the childrens’ school years, assisting with the Sunday lunch program at Most Precious Blood, and the funeral ministry and Silverado at Risen Christ Church to name a few of her volunteer endeavors. She worked part-time for several accounting firms before settling into full-time work at Dach Masonry followed by Cemex (formerly Southdown). Bernie embraced her roles as wife and mother and friend. Bernie and Joe’s home was full of the grace of hospitality, cookies and candy. They frequently hosted family and friend gatherings. They were active travelers with siblings, friends, in-laws, Club, The Kahunas, and the Silverado group. Bernie was an active card player (bridge) in multiple circles, frequently as a substitute ringer.
She is survived by her children, Tim (Diane) Horrigan of Cedar Falls, IA, Pat (Shila) Horrigan of Spring, TX, Teresa (David) Vieira of Woodbury, MN, Peggy (Brian) Ries of Falcon, CO, and Tom Horrigan of Centennial, CO. She is survived by grandchildren Joseph (Emily) Horrigan, Katie (Tim) Swords, Annie Horrigan (fiancé Owen Heetland), Maggie Horrigan, Ashley (Matt) Brautman, Jade (Sam) Savage, Nicholas Ries, Tabor Horrigan, TJ Horrigan, and Ty Horrigan, plus 10 great-grandchildren, daughter-in-law Hilary Horrigan and sister-in-law Liz (Boland) Kafer. Numerous Boland and Horrigan nieces and nephews, dear friends, colleagues, church friends, and bridge partners added to her joy.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, one sister Mary Boland in infancy, three brothers, Robert, Patrick and Bernard Boland and her parents Leo and Ella Boland.
