Bernard 'Bernie' Lewis

July 13, 1938 — June 14, 2012

Bernard (Bernie) Lewis passed away Thursday, June 14, 2012 after a long illness. Bernie was born July 13, 1938 in Webster Springs, West Virginia to Arch and Violet Lewis and grew up by the banks of the Elk River where he learned the love of fishing and crawdad hunting. Bernie spent 2 years in the army at Fort Riley, Kansas where he met his wife, Alicia. He moved to Denver for job opportunities and the adventures of Colorado. Having worked in his parents' general store while growing up, Bernie then developed his sales experience in Denver as a Realtor and property manager for many years. Leisure hours were spent donning chest waders preparing to catch that elusive fish with a fly rod. Enjoying a campsite in the Colorado mountains was part of that fishing trip and he taught the basics of fishing to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting with cousins and friends. All of those trips provided the stories that brought smiles during the off season. Besides the hours spent with outdoor activities, he also enjoyed woodworking. An estate sale ad always tempted Bernie to add to his special collections. All types of birds appreciated his backyard efforts to keep them well fed and bathed during the year. Teaching his grandchildren the games of checkers and Battleship brought a good laugh and pride. These games were often followed by a good chase around the house. He is survived by his wife Alicia, son Eric Lewis (Cindy), their children Hannah, Kyle, and Ryan, daughter Andrea Lewis (Andy Wasilisin), their children Sophia and Michael, sister Boots Gross (Howard), and nieces and nephew. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2012, 10:00 AM at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood, Colorado 80227. Committal to follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver, Colorado 80235. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 2255 South Oneida Street, Denver, Colorado 80224 or www.cancer.org.
