Bernice Lovejoy

November 2, 1921 — February 21, 2006

Bernice C. Lovejoy, 84, of Centennial. Preceded in death by husband Fred Lovejoy. Bernice (B) Lovejoy was born in Portland, Maine on November 2, 1921 and was sent to our Lord early Tuesday morning February 21, 2006 in Centennial, Colorado. She grew up in Portland, Maine and was the oldest of three children. Her sister, Dorothy (Dot) and her brother Bob still live in the Portland area. She graduated from Deering High School, then enrolled at Skidmore College. She became an Executive Secretary. She worked for Connecticut Mutual Insurance Company as an area cashier. She eventually earned her credentials as a Certified Underwriter. In her spare time she loved to sail, cross country ski and travel. She also knit and embroidered for relaxation. Her knitting stayed with her throughout her life, and she became an accomplished knitter. B's father owned several sawmills throughout New England. He not only succeeded in business, but also entered politics and became a senator in the Maine Senate. While attending a dance, B met Fred Lovejoy. They hit it off and married in 1948. Fred had been a Navy pilot. He worked for Forster Manufacturing. They had four children Susan, Bruce, Barbara and Nancy. In the early 1960s B and Fred moved their family to Wichita, Kansas. Fred took a job with H.J. Cole Company, and B became his secretary and was given some accounts to work with as a manufacturer's representative. They sold many different paper products. In the early 1990s Fred's Parkinsons Disease made it difficult for B to take care of him. They moved to a retirement community in Aurora, Colorado to be closer to two of her daughters, Barbara and Nancy. The disease took Fred from her in 1995. She was living at The Village in the Johnson Center when she died. She loved living there. She was active in any of the communities she lived in and was always very supportive of the activities the communites had to offer. But being at "The Village" was like being at home for her. She loved to knit, and found herself knitting with friends most evenings to wind down their days. B is survived by her children: Susan Hanson, who is married to Dave, Bruce Lovejoy who is married to Irene, Barbara Klein who is married to Kenneth, and Nancy Madland who is married to Peter. Her grandchildren are Nils and Marit Hanson, Andrew and Jennifer Lovejoy, Zachary and Megan Klein, and Rachael and Hayley Madland. Her brother and sister are Bob Cleaves, who is married to Helen, and Dorothy Jordan who is marred to Clay. Memorial services will be held at The Village at the Johnson Center, 4761 East Costilla Avenue, Centennial, CO. on Friday, March 3rd, at 1:30 p.m. Donations may be made to The Village Employees Fund, The Village at the Johnson Center, 4761 East Costilla Avenue, Centennial, CO 80122.
