Betty J. Makowski

Betty Jean (Hohnstein) Makowski died suddenly and peacefully, September 11, 2013 in her home after a long courageous battle with pulmonary hypertension and congestive heart failure. She was born in Denver on March 30, 1932 to the late John J. and Katherine Elizabeth (Schindler) Hohnstein. She attended Garden Place Elementary School, Horace Mann Junior High School, and North High School. Betty married the late Anthony Joseph Makowski, Jr. on June 25, 1950. They were married for 57 years. Together they raised 2 children: the late Anthony Joseph Makowski, III, M.D., and Sharon Kay (Makowski) Miller. Betty was a homemaker by profession. When not tending to her family, she was active in the community. She served as room mother at school, was both a school PTO president and also served as a state PTO president. She helped raise funds for many charitable organizations including March of Dimes, Disabled Veterans, and Cancer Research. She worked briefly as a receptionist/manager of a beauty salon before retiring. In retirement, Betty enjoyed gardening, canning, traveling, collecting Teddy Bears, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. Betty is survived by her daughter, Sharon K. Miller of Littleton, her brother John Hohnstein, Jr (Mary) of Arvada; daughter-in-law Anne K.S. Makowski of Highlands Ranch; son-in-law Ronald E. Miller of Centennial; brother/sister-in-law Ronald T. and Shirley Makowski of Lakewood; grandchildren Genevieve Bennett (J. Casey) of Highlands Ranch, Kathy Makowski of Lone Tree, Anthony J. Makowski, IV of Highlands Ranch, Daniel Miller (Ashley) of Thornton, Betty Crosman (Dave) of Lakewood; great-grandchildren John C., Joey, and Loralei Bennett of Highlands Ranch; also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Services will be held 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Grace Presbyterian Church, 9720 US HWY 85 N, Highlands Ranch, CO 80125 (NE corner of Highlands Ranch Parkway and Santa Fe). Committal Service at Ft. Logan Cemetery, 2:15 PM. Donations in Betty's honor may be made to a charity of your choice.
