Beverly (Hirt) Blake (95) passed away peacefully at home, with her beloved husband, George, by her side. A service will be held Sunday, January 22, at 1:00 p.m. at Columbine United Church, 6375 S. Platte Canyon Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Columbine United Church or New Century Hospice.
Born in Minneapolis to loving parents, Matt and Evelyn Hirt, Beverly and her older sister Audrey shared fond memories of summers at their grandmother’s farm and winters iceskating on a nearby pond. Bev attended college in St. Cloud, MN and excelled as a first grade teacher. She was proud to have taught so many children to read.
In 1951, Bev married chemical engineer, George Blake. Always adventurous, the two spent the summer of ’52 backpacking and hitchhiking around Europe, staying in youth hostels for 25 cents a night or sleeping on third class trains to save money. Their love of travel never waned. Eventually they explored 42 countries on six continents.
In 1960, the Blakes moved to Mexico City with their two small girls and stayed 25 years, as George pursued a career in international business. Bev threw herself into life in Mexico, rising to all challenges. She learned Spanish, volunteered at a charity hospital helping deliver babies, served as the president of the PTA and taught English to the neighborhood children.
In addition to handling the traditional roles of wife, mother and friend with skill and energy, she mastered many other roles during her long life. She was a warm and charming hostess, whether hosting an elegant dinner for Mexican dignitaries or a casual volleyball party for friends.
When they returned to the United States, Bev continued her interests in gardening, bridge, tennis, grand parenting and church. At church, she excelled as the greeter for many years. She was famous for her infectious smile, caring nature and delightful personality.
Beverly is survived by her husband George Blake, two daughters: Susan Blake-Smith and Nancy Blake, five granddaughters and eight great grandchildren.
We love you, Beverly! We always will.
