Bonnie L. Kurtz passed away May 6, 2022 with her husband Michael L. Kurtz and her children at her side. Bonnie, a native of Denver, graduated from St. Francis De Sales High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Colorado in 1961.
While in school, she met and married the love of her life, Michael, and they remained married for 57 years. Bonnie became a supercharged mother of five: Gregory(Seattle), Bradley(Denver), Matthew and Tim(Parker), and Sarah(Portland).
During the early years of marriage she had a work hiatus, during which Bonnie became a masterful hand piecer and quilter highlighting restoration (vintage) fabrics in all of the quilts. Her work was displayed at the Colorado State Capitol building, The Pioneer Museum in Colorado Springs, and at numerous Colorado Quilt Council festivals. Calligraphy and wood block printing skills were also mastered.
She was a voracious reader of history, Dickens, Churchill, English mysteries, Civil War history and biographies. As the family grew older she became the carpool taxi and an enthusiastic sidelines spectator, cheerleader, and coach for soccer, baseball, softball, football, volleyball and tennis. In an attempt to avoid being a lifeguard, she taught all five children how to swim.
Bonnie and Michael travelled to follow their interests in the Northeast, Northwest, and California, sightseeing, quilt peeking, biking, hiking, and sipping wine and microbrews, plus visiting old friends. She reveled in her trips to London, Paris, and Rome, as well as the Italian countryside.
When the ability to work arose again, she returned to neonatal nursing at Children’s Hospital and later St. Luke’s for 26 years. Remarkably, she managed the family of seven while working the night shift.
Bonnie loved her epic walks either to Coors Field, Cherry Creek Mall, or her favorite place, Washington Park. Weather was no deterrent as long as there was “no wind.”
Bonnie is survived by her husband, five children, her sister Patt Kingsbury, and nine grandchildren. She will be loved and forever missed.
