Boyd LaVaughn Stokes, 83, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Denver Hospice. He was born in Perdue Hill, Alabama. Served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1967 aboard the USS Richmond K. Turner DLG 20, where he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He is also a plank owner of the ship.
In February 1964, he met Doreen in Rutherford, NJ and they were married on June 3, 1966. Boyd was a police officer for the Pritchard Police Department and in 1971/1972 moved up to New Jersey where he worked at Dock Watch/Millington Quarry for 30 years. He loved watching country and western movies especially John Wayne and country music as well as listening to his grandson Cody play the piano.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents George Eldridge and Mildred Gandy Stokes, his sisters Jean Drew of Eight Mile, AL and Maxine Peters of Whistler, AL and his son Christopher Lee Stokes of Macon, GA.
He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Doreen J. Dornbierer Stokes of Centennial, CO., son Louis Duane Stokes (Adriana) of Denver, CO., daughter Carrie Lynn Stokes of Aurora, CO., son Randi LaVaughn Stokes of Piscataway, NJ and grandson Cody LaVaughn Stokes of Centennial, CO, and granddaughters Akira Holmes, Teaya Stokes, and Kayln Stokes, great granddaughters - Rowan, Arlo, Amara.
Viewing and Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024 at Horan and McContaty, 11150 E. Dartmouth Avenue, Aurora, CO 80014 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm mst. In lieu of flowers, you can make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
