Brother Leo Burkhard, F.S.C., died November 1, 2007 at the age of 85 after an extended illness. The seventh of nine children, he was born in Delta, CO on October 4, 1922, the son of George Burkhard and Mary Elizabeth Smith. He is survived by his sister Martha Loudenburg and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews with whom he stayed in touch over the years and who meant the world to him. He is remembered with great affection by his religious community, students, and friends at Mullen High School in Denver and by De La Salle Christian Brothers in New Orleans-Sante Fe District and all over the world. He received the habit of the Brothers on August 14, 1939 and his tour of duty included service in Monterrey, Mexico; Lafayette, LA; Sante Fe, NM; El Paso, TX; Rome, France, Switzerland, and Denver. He was an accomplished musician, avid tennis player, expert fly fisherman, inspired French cuisine cook, master of several languages, and prolific researcher and writer on the history of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and their founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle. He spent 35 years in France teaching, researching, and establishing an international conference center at Parmenie, near Grenoble, France. A Memorial Mass will be held in the Rilko Events Center Chapel at Mullen High School, 3601 S. Lowell Blvd.
