Camille Paulette Wean was born in Mason City, Iowa on April 30, 1943, to her parents Lawrence Wean and Camille Reynaud Wean. As a child, she and her family moved to Tacoma, Washington, and on to Butte, Montana; Austin, Minnesota, and finally, to Tulsa, Oklahoma where she grew up. Paulette was one of seven children. She graduated from Monte Cassino High School in Tulsa and continued her education at Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas, where she studied speech and hearing therapy. Upon graduation, she began her career in Lincoln, Illinois as a speech therapist. Paulette then moved to Denver, Colorado, to continue her career.
She met her husband, Lawrence E. McGill Jr. here in Denver. They were married on November 30, 1968. She would spend the rest of her life here in Denver raising her children, teaching, and volunteering with several organizations including the Central City Opera Guild and Junior Symphony Guild. Paulette loved her role as mother to her three children and was very involved in their activities, often serving as “Team Mom” for nearly all of their sports. From making figure skating costumes to driving to swim meets, basketball tournaments, and football and lacrosse games, she did it all.
Paulette spent most of her career in special education for Denver Public Schools. She completed her MA at the University of Northern Colorado in Special Education – Severe Affective Needs in 1995. Her most fulfilling position was Special Educator for the Children’s Hospital Day Treatment Program for fragile children, for which she received the 9 News Teacher of the Month Award in 2006. Paulette also served as a Union Representative for the Denver Classroom Teachers Association. She retired in 2010.
Paulette is survived by her husband, Larry, and their three children Erin Newby, Bridget McGill, and Sean McGill, grandson Justin Newby Jr., and siblings Terry Wean, Connie Farmer, Anthony Wean, Annette Franke, their spouses, and 13 nieces and nephews.
