Candy Meininger-Johns

December 1, 1947 — August 21, 2009

Candy Meininger-Johns was born on December 1, 1947, the daughter of Henry ""Cap"" Meininger and Beulah Hatcher, and sister of Henry Meininger III. Born and raised in Denver, Candy graduated from East High School and attended both Mesa State College and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Candy was proud to be a life-long Coloradoan and the 4th generation co-owner, with her brother Henry, of Meininger Art Supply, one of Colorado's oldest family-run businesses. Candy was one of 150 people honored by the city on Denver's 150th anniversary in 2008. Candy had a rich and fulfilling life because she embraced so much of what life had to offer. She had a large circle of devoted friends because she nurtured those friendships and had a wonderful sense of humor and playful personality. With those friends, Candy enjoyed theater, bridge, golf and travel. Being naturally civic-minded, Candy served on countless boards of many organizations, including serving as President of the Art Students League of Denver, and was a very active member of Zonta Club of Denver II, a service organization, for several decades. Candy was chosen by her fellow Zontians as Zontian of the Year'""not once, but twice. She was also the consummate fund-raiser, establishing golf tournaments to raise money for Zonta's charities. In 1991, Candy met her future husband, Bob Johns, and a great match was made; her family and friends knew she had found the right one. Together, Candy and Bob traveled, socialized with their many friends, played golf, sailed and spent time together at their mountain home. Candy was greatly loved by many and will be deeply missed by all. She is survived by her husband, Bob Johns; her brother Henry Meininger (Betsy Palin); nephew, Judson Meininger; several other nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Zonta Club of Denver II, or the Art Students League of Denver.
