Carl ""Gary"" Sims

November 16, 1942 — April 10, 2011

Gary was born in Portland, OR on 11/16/42, and passed away in Conifer, CO on 4/10/11. Gary met Lorene, the love of his life and wife of 47 years, in 1960 while attending a summer seminar for piano at Rocky Ridge Music Center, and after graduating from the University of Nebraska they married in 1964. He joined the Marine Corps in 1965, achieving the rank of Captain. He enrolled in the University of Denver law school and entered the bar in 1972. During those years, three lovely daughters, Lori, Charlene and Katy, were born. After joining the Chief Counsel's Office of the IRS in Utah for a short time, he returned to Denver and joined the law firm of Holme Roberts & Owen in the tax division, then joined with his DU law friend in forming Sims & Boster, now Sims Boster Suyat. Although the intricacies of the law were compelling and exciting, he also loved playing and listening to jazz and classical music, was passionate about woodworking, and studied, in depth, church history and U.S. history. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by sons-in-law Kevin Schmitt and Kevin Murphy, and his darling grandchildren, Tanner, Madison and Ella Schmitt, Noah and Ari Goldman, and Will Murphy. Services will be held at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2700 South Downing, Denver, on Friday April 15, at 10:00 a.m. Remembrances in his honor may be made to the Salvation Army, Emmanuel UMC, or a charity of choice.
