Beloved wife, devoted mother, adored Nana and friend to all, Carol Forington dedicated her life to others. On August 29, 2020, she passed on to her place of rest unexpectedly. She leaves many behind: her husband, Bill; sons Don (Catherine) and Bob (Mary); daughter Cindy (Michael). Her grandchildren Eric, Stacie, Kelly, Jason, Peter and Madison; great-grandchildren William, Grayson, Tenley, Anniston, Layla, Calon and Brynley. She is predeceased by her son, Jim, her sister, Lynn and her great-grandson, Caden. Carol touched so many lives with her constant smile, ready optimism and generous spirit. She was always ready with sincere compliments, encouragement, a listening ear and a good meal.
Carol was born in Denver in 1933 to Ralph and Hazel Berndt. She attended South High School where she met the love of her life, Bill. They quickly built a family and moved to the Harvey Park neighborhood, where they lived for over 60 years. Together, they took adventures in the airplane piloted, traveled the world, and invested in their future with hard work. They taught their children countless skills of self-reliance, craftsmanship, and a frugal value for repairing and improving what they had (rather than throwing away and buying new). She modeled loyalty to her family to the extreme. She kept a beautiful home, always filled with good food, laughter and time - she was never in a hurry. As a family, she took camping trips, adventures, and supported her children's interests any way she could. She ran Girl and Boy Scout troops for many years. She and Bill loved a number of dogs, many of whom were named Samson or Bronson. Carol walked the dogs daily, keeping her as healthy as any 86 year old could hope to be. She and Bill enjoyed a beautiful farm near Sedalia, where they spent half their time in the last 25 years. Working alongside Bill, she kept the farm in park-like beauty.
Focused on her family, Nana built memories for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always ready to play, stay with the children, host the holiday gatherings, make the birthday cakes. Nana's legacy is one of happiness, kindness and grace. She was always up for fun and games, walks, explorations and kept great toys in the back bedroom at the "farm." She tended to chickens, cows, turkeys, flowers and hummingbirds over the years. There were always gumdrops in glass dishes that a child could take without asking.
Active in the Episcopal church, Carol contributed untold hours in service to her community in a variety of roles. Up until her final week of life, she served on the altar guild at St's Phillip and James in SW Denver. Carol was an excellent bowler, playing with a league for years. She played bridge monthly with her long-time, high-school friends up until the last week of her life. She knit, tended a beautiful garden, decorated cakes and was skilled in many crafts.
She is missed beyond words. We will strive to be as kind as she showed us how to be.
