Carol Joy Mathilda Johnson Lind, age 97, was born December 8, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BS in Chemistry in 1949. She started working for the US Geological Survey at the Denver Federal Center in 1963. In 1968 she moved with her family to California to work as a research chemist for John D. Hem, a respected researcher on water chemistry. Her work with him involved laboratory studies and writing and presenting papers on minerals such as manganese in water, including the acid mine drainage at Pinal Creek, Arizona. https://www.researchgate.net/scientific-contributions/Carol-J-Lind-3677824 Her work in the USGS continued for 35 years until her retirement in 1998.
She shared all the wonders of nature with her children, Karen (Bruce) Chamberlain and John (Teri) Lind and 3 grandchildren, Ellen Lind, Karl Lind and Anna (Michael) DeBella. Throughout the years, her home and heart have been filled with love, family and dear friends. She was very active in church life, Bible studies, choirs and fellowship with fellow Christians.
In 1984 she visited her father’s and mother’s families in Sweden. Several more visits to Sweden followed as did many letters. In 1990 Carol attended the 125th anniversary celebration of her grandparents’ wedding in 1865 with her Swedish cousins. Together they went off into the “skog” (forest) and visited the rocky farm and remains of the 2 room log home.
Like her father, Gus who made his own violin and played it in the woods there, and mother Florenze, a piano teacher, Carol delighted in making music, playing the piano, singing in many choirs, and making music on all kinds of instruments including her father’s violin.
Most of all she delighted in her relationship with Jesus. Commenting on the hymn “All the way my Savior leads me”, she said that’s a good one. She knew his tender care in both good times and hard.
March 6, 2024 she left us to continue her praise in his presence. In her final days she spoke with joy of seeing and hugging her savior Jesus Christ, then her beloved grandmother, Mathilda followed by a “hug fest” of all her loved ones who had gone before her. Her siblings Dean Johnson, George Johnson, Roger Johnson and Marvel Iverson all predeceased her by many years.
