Carolyn M. Stevens

August 13, 1934 — March 6, 2025

Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. A proud “Yooper”, she loved to tell stories of living on the island year round, enjoying fun summers with the cottagers who arrived every year and taking the dog sled across the lake in winter to travel to school. She and her parents eventually moved to Detroit, where she became a big sister to Ruth and Irene. It was in Detroit, on her first day of Senior Year in high school, that she met a very tall, somewhat loud, young man named John, who would go on to become the love of her life.

John and Carolyn proceeded to have 5 children and live all over the country as they moved for John’s work. She never hesitated to pack up and move and they made dear friends wherever they landed. She was a wonderful mother who dedicated herself to raising her children and giving back to her community, be that through the Catholic Church or through community organizations in the various towns they lived. In the mid-1960’s in Detroit she worked with the Catholic Church on their committee for racial equality as well as other ministries within the Church. As well, she was active in the Newcomer Organization in various cities, Assistance League of Eugene, OR, and P.E.O. in Denver.

Carolyn’s loves were many and varied. Besides her family and friends, she was a proud graduate and lifelong fan of the University of Michigan, an active member of the Catholic Church, a gifted artist and a talented orator.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her beloved husband John, her sister Irene, her great-granddaughter Rebecca and her companion Edgar Makowski. She is survived by her devoted children Jim (Ann), Cathy (Larry) Farnsworth, Paul (Michelle), John (Ellen) and Ellyn (Walt) Coughlin, 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 28, 11:30am, Pax Christi Catholic Church, 10675 Jaguar Dr., Lone Tree, with reception to follow.
