Carroll Duane Speckman, born May 17, 1932, to Herman and Pauline Speckman, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2024, surrounded by family.
Born on a farm and raised in Colby, KS, Carroll graduated from the University of Kansas and served in the Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge as an Officer. He moved to Denver, Colorado, and began his career at the U.S. National Bank where he met his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Speckman.
They were married in September 1959 and had three children, Mark, Jennifer and Sara. Carroll joined the bank as a trainee in 1956 and after 34 years of service, retired as President and Chief Executive of United Bank of Denver. He believed strongly in community involvement, serving on and chairing numerous boards including Mile High United Way, the Governor’s Task Force, Lutheran Medical Center and Lutheran Medical Foundation, CU Presidents’ Leadership Class, University of Denver Board of Fellows, Primera Health Care, and LMCC Foundation. He was also President of the Rotary Club of Denver.
As a child, Carroll lived through the Great Depression and the dust bowl era. He experienced the loss of his father at age 6 and the loss of the family farm. Through this adversity he developed the discipline to work hard, to give back to the community, and most important, an appreciation and love of family. Carroll loved being a Dad to his children and ‘Opa’ to all his grandchildren, and he enthusiastically supported all their events and activities. No matter how cold, how early or how long, he was there to support and cheer.
Carroll and Peggy spent their retirement years embracing their growing family, traveling the globe, and relaxing on their favorite beaches in Hawaii. He and Peggy enjoyed swimming laps and taking long walks with their dogs, a favorite being those in the mountains with golden retrievers Rob and Ellie.
Carroll was preceded in death by Peggy in 2017. He is survived by son Mark (Lora) Speckman, grandkids Emily, Jacob, and Rickert Speckman; daughter Sara (Ski) Struzeski, grandkids Joey and Johnny Struzeski; and daughter Jennifer Speckman, grandkids Porter Bennett and Michael (Justina) Speckman, and great-grandkids Teddy and Eli Speckman. He is also survived by sister Lorene Curtin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service to be held at Horan & McConaty, 5303 E. County Line Road, Centennial, CO 80122 on November 23 at 1PM.
In lieu of flowers, Carroll requested donations to The Denver Hospice, Mile High United Way, and Wounded Warriors Project. The family would like to express gratitude and appreciation for the wonderful and loving care Carroll received at the Vi Retirement Center in Highlands Ranch.
