Mom was born in Denver on March 19, 1927. She was raised near Ovid and Sedgwick in northeast Colorado on the farm. During World War II Mom drove the tractor 12- 14 hours a day to help her parents. As a a teenager Mom supervised six Nazi German war prisoners who worked on the family farm for her Dad. Mom honored her parents and knew what hard work was!
She graduated Valedictorian from Sedgwick High School and started college at Loretto Heights but decided to return back to the farm after her first semester. She began teaching 3rd grade. Dad and Mom married in 1946 and Mom continued to teach for 8 years while getting her teaching degree. Dad became an excellent administrator in public education because Mom encouraged him to follow this path.
Mom taught grades 1-6 and would tell you she never taught a child she did not love. She also tutored children through adults. In 1975, while teaching in Mapleton Public Schools, she was selected to be one of the top three teachers in the state of Colorado. She retired from public education in 1987 but continued to serve others via the church and tutoring. Mom loved to be creative. She loved to cook, decorate, and took piano lessons. She admired people who excelled in developing their talents as any true teacher would.
Starting in the early 1960s Mom struggled with myasthenia gravis, a devastating long term neuromuscular disease, until God miraculously healed her in 1972 so she could continue to serve Him.
We will remember Mom as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was exuberant with love throughout her life. Love is a choice. Mom chose to love God and others as a child and lived this way until her passing at the age of 95. She served in Stephen’s Ministry, read Bible passages at Mass, and sang in the choir. Mom loved to pray and study the Bible and would speak boldly about Jesus when appropriate. Mom was willing to face the truth because love rejoices in the truth.
We will remember Mom as a servant for the Lord Jesus Christ who loved God and others throughout her life. Jesus told us that the greatest in the kingdom is the servant. Mom lived in this capacity as a humble servant with a bright and cheery smile that glowed with love for others.
