Charles H. Green of Castle Pines, Colorado, passed away on February 26, 2022, with his wife and children by his side. Charlie was extremely active in his church and community right up until his death at age 85 from complications caused by COVID-19. He was a loving husband for 65 of those years, a devoted father and grandfather, as well as an accomplished engineer who helped send spacecraft to the moon and Mars. He was also a man of deep faith and spirituality.
Charlie was born June 13, 1936, in Atlanta, Georgia, to parents Charles Hunter Green Sr. and Mary Bathsheba Beasley. The family eventually moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where he attended Granby High School. Charlie graduated from the engineering program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) in 1960.
Upon graduation, Charlie began a career with NASA at Langley Research Center where he worked on the Lunar Orbiter mission that mapped the surface of the moon ahead of the manned Apollo missions. He also worked on the Viking spacecraft mission that landed on Mars in 1976 to take photographs and analyze soil samples. Later in his career, Charlie was employed by Martin Marietta and Lockheed Martin in Washington, D.C., and Colorado. After retiring, he shared his passion and knowledge with the public as a volunteer at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
Charlie and his wife, Lynn, opened their homes in Colorado and Northern Virginia to 10 international exchange students from around the world over the years. Charlie was a longstanding member of Christ Church Denver, where he served as Verger.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lynn, of Castle Pines; son Charles Green III of Castle Rock, Colorado; daughter and son-in-law Jeanette and Thomas Jolly of Escondido, California; sister Suzanne Carvajal of Florida; as well as five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Charlie was predeceased by his son Keith and his parents.
A service will be held at Christ Church Denver at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Charlie’s memory to your favorite charity
