Charlotte Juanita Nay was born May 15, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan to Jesse Avery and Rosie Tate Avery. When her Mother passed away (Charlotte was two years old and her brother, Jesse was nine), they were raised by their Grandmother. Charlotte attended Cass Technical High School. After High School she decided to pursue a career in cosmetology. She attended the prestigious Virginia Farrell Beauty Academy in New York and Murray Beauty Academy in Detroit. In 1955, she met and married Julius Hillman. A barber by trade, Julius and his brother, James opened Motor City Barber Shop which became very successful and they combined with Charlotte and became a full-service business. To that union Cheryl was born. Charlotte was married to Phillip Nay until his death in 1992. Charlotte, who was adventuresome by nature and tired of the crime in Detroit and yearned for a better environment for Cheryl so she migrated to Denver in 1975. She continued her passion in cosmetology and when Cheryl decided to make it her career, Mother and daughter opened the Personal Touch Salon in 1985. Cheryl married Darius Brown in 1989 and from that union came Darius III, the 'apple' of Charlotte's eye (her only grandchild). Charlotte continued hairdressing on a limited basis until her illness in 2002. Charlotte had a passion for reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing card games and watching the game show, Jeopardy. She is survived by daughter, Cheryl, son-in-law, Darius and grandson, Darius III and extended family and friends.
