Chloé was born on February 12, 1953, to Grant and Chloe Coon of Garfield, Utah. As a child she enjoyed lively card games, cabin outings, and other adventures with her familyâparticularly her beloved sister, Teresa, and a large collection of aunts, uncles, and cousins. She competed in riding competitions with her horse, Tico, and participated in school plays and musicals. She even had a job answering fan mail for Donny & Marie Osmond.
Chloé pursued a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Utah, conferring in 1974. During that time, she also met the love of her life: Thomas Melvin Johnson. The happy pair married on July 12, 1974, and enjoyed their early years together in Sandy and Salt Lake City, Utah.
In 1977, Chloé and Tom moved to Arvada, Colorado, where they started their family a few years later. Chloé gave birth to Benjamin Thomas in 1980 and Matthew Grayson in 1983. She was a consummate ""boy mom,"" taking her sons on weekly visits to the zoo to act as junior docents and help care for the snakes and allowed them to acquire a menagerie of pets at home. In summers, she took them to Utah for extended visits with family and to experience the wonders of one of her favorite places: Yellowstone. Years down the road, when both of her adult boys were in bands, she would faithfully appear at every gig in her band shirt, ready to cheer.
Around the time her boys wrapped up elementary school, Chloé resumed her teaching career. She spent twenty years at East Middle School teaching 8th grade language arts. Her students loved and respected her as she enriched their lives through literature and writing, making material like Dickens' A Christmas Carol (her favorite) accessible and meaningful to a very diverse population of students and skill levels. She directed the school plays and musicals there, as well.
Chloé's love of theater led her to serve several years as a member of the board for the Aurora Fox Arts Center. She took much delight in delivering the pre-show ""curtain speech"" on the weekends, writing her own witty scripts to match the flavor of the show. She also sat on the Aurora Cultural Arts Commission. The birth of her precious grandchildren set her sights on different service opportunities. She helped create a ""grandparent arm"" of a local March of Dimes committee, and for the last ten years she has served as the leader/captain of Team Lucy, proudly spearheading fundraising efforts for both The March of Dimes (over $60,000 raised) and Make-A-Wish (5 Wishes granted so far).
As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Chloé touched many lives. She was a big believer in ""Bloom where you're planted"" and flourished in a wide variety of callings. However, there was a special place in her heart for the youth of the ward and she acted as a mentor and special friend to many young people.
Chloé's greatest achievement has been as a loving wife and highly involved mother and grandmother. She treasured every moment with grandchildren Lucy (10), Eliana (9), Kayden (8), Eden (7), and Eleanor (5). She has been documenting the beautiful life and legacy she and Tom created through meticulous yearly scrapbooks. Her greatest wish is that when her family and friends miss her, they will turn to those albums to remember the wonderful times they spent together. When they do, they will smile at the woman who loved funny t-shirts, Dr. Pepper, and stuffed bunnies, and they will miss her warmth and the love she freely gave to all she met.
Chloé was preceded in death by her son Matthew and granddaughter Lucy. She is survived by a cast of thousands who count themselves lucky to have had Chloé's light in their lives.
